Milwaukee Urban Demonstration Farm Network

We bring together the Milwaukee area urban agriculture community to drive innovative conservation practices that support ecological, economic, and community resilience.

The Milwaukee Urban Demonstration (MUD) Farm Network is led by the UW-Extension Community Food Systems Program in collaboration with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

MUD brings together farmers, researchers, and conservation experts to share practical strategies that build soil health, protect water resources, improve yields, and support wildlife. As the first urban USDA demonstration farm network, we showcase how conservation practices can be effectively applied to small-scale urban farms across Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.

Our Conservation Practices

We focus on soil health, water quality, crop production, and wildlife habitat—core conservation areas essential for building resilient urban farms.

Soil Health

In cities like Milwaukee—where industrial and residential use has degraded soils—rebuilding organic matter, improving water movement, and restoring biological life are essential for resilient, productive farming.

Water Quality

To improve water access and water quality, our network focuses on efficient irrigation methods, rainwater capture, and minimizing runoff to protect our local watersheds.

Crop Production

Our farms produce a diversity of crops in limited space by integrating crop rotations, succession plantings, and season extension—ensuring reliable harvests and boosting farm profitability.

Wildlife Habitat

MUD farms support wildlife by providing pollinator strips, healthy soils, nesting sites, shelters, and safe corridors, while also using wildlife-friendly fencing to help protect foxes, coyotes, deer, and other species.

Meet the Farmers

Our network of growers spans the Milwaukee area, each with their own unique approach to farming. Through diverse production methods, they showcase the many ways urban agriculture can thrive.
